Tour Leiden University (virtually)!

Leiden University is one of Europe’s oldest universities and in this entry I’ll show you the two campuses (Leiden and The Hague), some of the different departments, the sports center and some libraries!

The Leiden campus is quite different from the ones at Karolinska, because everything is spread out across the city. The comparison that comes to mind for me is Lund University and how the city is kind of like the campus.

LUMC: Leiden University Medical Centre

LUMC is right next to Leiden C train station, so it’s super convenient public transport wise. As a biomedicine student this is the only area I’m in. My time is split between three buildings: the hospital itself (LUMC), the Research Building and the Education Building. LUMC is where the lecture halls and main canteen are located. The Research Building is where we do our lab and dissection practicals. Then there’s the Education Building which has one lecture hall and the rest are smaller rooms used for workgroups. It’s also connected to LUMC via a bridge, so you don’t have to walk outside to go between lectures and workgroups.

Lipsius

This is where social studies programmes are, I’ve actually never been inside so I’ve asked a friend to take some photos that you’ll see below:

USC: University Sports Center (& Exam Hall)

USC is as the name suggests, is the sports hall. It’s really big and has lots of facilities, including a gym, an outdoor tennis court and sports halls for anything from badminton and basketball to pilates and dance classes. Exams are also taken in these various sports halls.

Faculty of Science

Right across from USC is the Faculty of Science and this is where the majority of the STEM programmes (excluding the medicine ones) are. Once again, I’ve never been inside, but I do have this photo I took during my first week:

The Hague Campus

I’ve only ever passed by the campus in The Hague, so I don’t know much about it. But, from what I understand, some social science students will have courses in both The Hague and Leiden campuses.

Libraries

I’ve been to the main Leiden University library, the library in LUMC and also the one in the law faculty. My favourite is the one in the law faculty because I think it’s so pretty. The main library is also really nice, it’s really big with plenty of places to sit and study. What surprised me though, was the access to the libraries as they seem to be exclusive for students. To enter the main uni library or the one in the law faculty, you have to scan your student ID (this doesn’t apply to the LUMC one though).

Hope you enjoyed this “virtual tour” and reach out if you have any questions!

See you in my next entry!

/ Rebekah
