Vienna – The Perfect Christmas Trip!
A little late for a Christmas-themed post, but I really wanted to share my trip to Vienna with my friends! We went right after our last exam, so this was around the beginning of December.
I also vlogged this entire trip, so if you’d like to see what Vienna really looks like in December, you can check it out here:
Day 1
My friends and I all arrived separately, some had left the Netherlands earlier to visit other Austrian cities and some came by train. I took a morning flight and landed in the afternoon. After dropping off my luggage, I met a local friend for a late lunch (she’s actually coming to Leiden for her exchange this spring semester). I then met up with one of my friends from KI (who’s also on exchange in LUMC) and we explored the Spittelberg Christmas market. It was recommended to us by locals and definitely felt less touristy and more cozy.
Day 2
After breakfast, we spend most of the day walking around Vienna, exploring the Hofburg Palace grounds and Old Town. As for the paid visits, we visited the Austrian National Library and also the Kunsthistorisches museum. Both are really worth a visit!

Later that day, we reunited with two more of our friends and explored the Christmas markets at Rathausplatz and Maria-Theresien-Platz together. These, especially the former, were massive! There were so many stalls and tons of people, you definitely feel the Christmas vibes!

Day 3
Started the day off with breakfast at the beautiful Gloriette café. We then explored Schönbrunn Palace and its Christmas market. Schönbrunn Palace is gorgeous and it also happened to be a sunny day so everything looked extra pretty!

The schedule for this day was packed, so after Schönbrunn was Belvedere Upper Palace. It’s now an art gallery and houses the infamous “The Kiss” painting by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.

After dinner at a lovely Austrian restaurant we ended the day with a second round of dessert at a traditional Viennese café.

Day 4
For our last day, we had breakfast together before splitting up – some of us were heading back to the Netherlands and some were going to continue travelling. I was heading back, but my flight was in the evening so I managed some sightseeing and also had some time to buy some souvenirs before I had to leave.
